Project Name: Energy Efficiency and Management Plan for the Galapagos Islands.

Brief description: In 2013, the regional energy company of the Galapagos Islands, Elecgalapagos, decided to carry out, in coordination with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energies of Ecuador, a project in which the use, consumption and management of energy in the Galapagos Islands would be planned. The project was developed by Creara, combining a local and international team comprised of experts from Creara’s Madrid and Santiago de Chile offices.

The project sought to gather information from the residential, public and tourist sectors of the islands. Following the collection of detailed information through surveys, interviews and consultation of other primary and secondary sources of information, the main energy and management deficiencies in these three sectors were identified.

Subsequently, numerous energy saving and renewable energy measures, together with energy management appropriate to each of the energy deficiencies detected, were proposed.

In addition, the project entailed the development of a training day in San Cristóbal as part of the training for the technicians of the electricity concessionaire Elecgalapagos.

Results achieved:  The project achieved, among others, the following milestones:

  • Training of company staff in energy management, energy efficiency and renewable energies
  • Identification of numerous measures to implement with quantification according to energy consumption, reduction of CO2 emissions, projected energy savings
  • The generation of various energy consumption scenarios depending on the degree of implementation of the savings, management and renewable energy measures developed.
